The YWCA has actively worked to eliminate racism and empower women since 1858.
Established locally in 1915, every single day of the year the YWCA of Niagara works to empower women and girls with knowledge that increases their choices, dignity and strength.
We were here through suffrage. Nationally, the YWCA held the first interracial conference in the South in the early 20th century. And we fought for civil rights and affirmative action. But we can't merely legislate our way towards equality.
We were ahead of our time and with incredible vision, the YWCA tackled problems in Niagara County no one else was comfortable talking about: domestic violence, poverty, homeless women with families, child care needs--the status and needs of women in Niagara County.
Women’s voices, over time, have blended to create the vision that makes and keeps us strong, even in the face of change and challenge. Change has strengthened us, renewing our commitment to eliminating racism and empowering women.
